Measuring the Broken Phase Sphaleron Rate Nonperturbatively

چکیده
We present details for a method to compute the broken phase sphaleron rate (rate of hot baryon number violation below the electroweak phase transition) nonperturbatively, using a combination of multicanonical and real time lattice techniques. The calculation includes the “dynamical prefactor,” which accounts for prompt recrossings of the sphaleron barrier. The prefactor depends on the hard thermal loops, getting smaller with increasing Debye mass; but for realistic Debye masses the effect is not large. The baryon number erasure rate in the broken phase is slower than a perturbative estimate by about exp(−3.6). Assuming the electroweak phase transition has enough latent heat to reheat the universe to the equilibrium temperature, baryon number is preserved after the phase transition if the ratio of (“dimensionally reduced” thermal) scalar to gauge couplings λ/g is less than .037.

The Nonperturbative Broken Phase Sphaleron Rate
I present a technique for measuring the broken phase sphaleron rate nonperturbatively. There are three parts to the calculation: determination of the probability distribution of Chern-Simons number NCS; measurement of 〈|dNCS/dt|〉NCS=1/2, the mean rate of change of NCS at the barrier; and measurement of the “dynamical prefactor,” the fraction of barrier crossings which result in a permanent inte...
متن کاملA Nonperturbative Measurement of the Broken Phase Sphaleron Rate
Abstract We develop a method to compute the sphaleron rate in the electroweak broken phase nonperturbatively. The rate is somewhat slower than a perturbative estimate. In SU(2)×U(1) Higgs theory at the physical value of ΘW , and assuming that the latent heat of the phase transition reheats the universe to the equilibrium temperature, baryon number erasure after the phase transition is prevented...
متن کاملThe Sphaleron Rate: Where We Stand
I review what we know about the “sphaleron rate”, which is the efficiency of baryon number violation at high temperatures T ∼ 100 GeV in the Standard Model. The leading behavior at weak coupling in the symmetric phase is known accurately; Γ = (10.7 ± .7)(gT /m D ) log(mD/g T )α5wT . At realistic values of the coupling our accuracy is worse. We also now have the tools to determine the rate nonpe...

Abstract We investigate analytically the fermionic fluctuation determinant at finite temperatures in the minimal standard model, including all operators up to dimension 6 and all contributions to the effective potential to all orders in the high T expansion, to 1 loop. We apply the results to find corrections to the Sphaleron erasure rate in the broken phase. We conclude that the analytic treat...

This talk reviews recent lattice results on the high T electroweak phase transition. A remarkably accurate picture emerges: a) the transition is of first order for mH < ∼ 80 GeV and vanishes for larger mH ; b) transition temperature, latent heat and interface tension are known, as well as c) the properties of the broken and symmetric phases. New developments in the sphaleron rate calculations a...
